Pollution.

Air pollution in SP is twice higher than the levels acceptable by WHOSituation Rio de Janeiro is worse than the state capital

GENEVA - The indices of pollution in São Paulo are two times the ceiling set by the World Health Organization ( WHO ) to consider the quality of acceptable air. The data are part of a survey published on Wednesday , 7 , and analyzes the situation of 1600 cities around the world.
WHO makes it clear that the data from each city can not be compared to the development of a ranking , since the measuring system is distinct , as well as used as a base year . The survey focuses on the evaluation of PM 2.5 particles , the smallest and the greatest potential to directly affect the lungs .
For the entity , a city can only consider having a clean air presents an average of no more than 10 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter . Any value above represents a risk to health . For St. Paul , the rate would be 19 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter ( 2012 data ) - almost twice the limit set by the WHO .
Cetesb also released on Wednesday report for 2013 on which claims there was a slight drop in annual averages of PM 2.5 in the previous year . The report does not bring one to the capital value, but the average per point of sample collection.
The University City was the one with the lowest rates of São Paulo , with an annual average of 15 micrograms of PM 2.5 per cubic meter . Have Pines recorded a rate of 18 ; Congonhas , 20 ; Parelheiros , 22 ; and Marginal Tietê , the height of the Bridge of Remedies , 27 .
Reduction plan . Carlos Komatsu , manager of the department of Environmental Quality Cetesb acknowledged that the city is still far from achieving the WHO recommended standards . A plan to reduce pollution is expected to be drafted until the middle of the year , with adoption in three years . Initially be placed three intermediate targets , even lower than that recommended by the WHO . Only after achieving them will be attempted to download the desired level .

According to Cetesb , concentrations of sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide recorded in the metropolitan area were among the lowest in the decade.
Other capitals . In the survey of WHO air quality in the Rio de Janeiro appear worse than São Paulo . 2010 data revealed a rate more than three times the levels established by the organization , with 36 micrograms . Information for 2011 point to Belo Horizonte recorded a rate of 28 vs. 17 of 16 Curitiba and Vitória . In the case of Salvador , the rate is 9 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter - is the only Brazilian cities below the ceiling of the WHO .
WHO also assessed the situation in the State of São Paulo . In Sorocaba , the rate is 17 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter ; in American, 18 ; Araçatuba , 21 ; and Jundiaí and Ribeirão Preto , 16 .
In the rest of Latin America , the situation is not comfortable . In Lima , for example , the rate is 38 micrograms , one of the cities with the worst air quality between regional capitals .
Deaths . According to WHO, more than 7 million people die every year because of air pollution . Only 12 % of the world population lives in cities considered with clean air , and half the population of the planet is in places where pollution rates are more than twice the rate deemed reasonable by the WHO .
The statistics shows that one in every eight deaths worldwide is linked to exposure to contaminated environments . /
